MIAMI — The Miami Heat welcomed back two of their top scorers this weekend, but the return of Tyler Herro and Norman Powell also highlighted that the team’s rotation remains a work in progress with just four weeks left in the NBA regular season.
Miami fell 121–117 to the Orlando Magic on Saturday night at Kaseya Center in a game that marked the return of both players from recent injuries. Herro came back after missing two games with left quad soreness, while Powell returned after being sidelined for seven games due to a right groin strain.
Despite leading the team in scoring this season with 22.5 points per game, Powell came off the bench in his return. Head coach Erik Spoelstra opted to keep him in a reserve role in order to preserve the momentum of the lineup that had won seven straight games during his absence.
Powell responded with 20 points in 31 minutes, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and continuing to provide the offensive spark that has made him one of Miami’s key weapons this season.
“These are not easy decisions right now,” Spoelstra said regarding the lineup adjustment. “Norman is going to play a lot of minutes. Tyler is going to play a lot of minutes. Right now, we’re focused on winning games.”
Lineup adjustments down the stretch
Herro returned to the starting lineup and finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists, though he struggled with shooting efficiency. During Powell’s absence, Herro had stepped into a larger offensive role, averaging 24.6 points per game while shooting over 55 percent from the field.
Because of injuries throughout the season, Herro and Powell have rarely shared the floor together. The two have logged just 173 minutes together through the Heat’s first 68 games.
Center Bam Adebayo acknowledged that integrating new lineup combinations late in the season can be challenging as players adjust to their roles.
“Everybody is trying to play the right way,” Adebayo said. “No one wants to disrupt the rhythm or the style of play.”
The rotation remains fluid as the team continues to recover from injuries. With Herro and Powell back in the lineup, guard Dru Smith was left out of the rotation Saturday, while forward Andrew Wiggins missed his fifth consecutive game with a left big toe injury.
Controversial late-game call
The closing moments of the game also sparked frustration within the Heat locker room. With Miami trailing by four points and 36.6 seconds remaining, officials called a five-second inbound violation against the Heat, giving possession back to Orlando.
Spoelstra and several players questioned the call, saying the count appeared to come too quickly.
“It felt like a quick five,” Spoelstra said after the game.
Powell was more direct, describing the decision as premature, while Adebayo suggested the call had a significant impact on the outcome.
However, the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report released Sunday determined that officials made the correct calls in the final sequences of the game.
Playoff race intensifies
With 14 games remaining in the regular season, the Heat are trying to secure a direct playoff berth and avoid the NBA’s play-in tournament for the first time in four years.
For Herro, the focus remains simple as Miami continues to adjust its rotation during the final stretch of the season.
“We all have the same goal,” Herro said. “At the end of the day, it’s about doing whatever it takes to win.”
