Trump Approves Firing Squad Execution for Fort Hood Mass Shooter

Nidal Malik Hasan was sentenced to death for the 2009 attack at a military base in Texas, where 13 people were killed and 32 others were wounded. The U.S. Army has not yet set an execution date.

U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized the execution by firing squad of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army major and psychiatrist responsible for the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

The decision was announced by Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, who said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the use of a firing squad and that Trump later approved the recommendation.

Hasan has been on military death row since 2013, when he was convicted for the November 5, 2009 attack. He opened fire inside a facility at Fort Hood where service members were preparing for overseas deployments.

The shooting left 13 people dead and 32 others injured. Twelve of those killed were active-duty service members, while another victim was a retired soldier.

Hasan was shot by a civilian police officer who responded to the attack. The injuries left him partially paralyzed.

Army to Determine Execution Date

Although the execution has now received presidential approval, no official date has been announced.

The U.S. Army secretary will be responsible for determining when and where the execution will take place.

If carried out, the execution would mark a rare event in the U.S. military justice system. The U.S. Armed Forces have not executed a prisoner since 1961.

Hasan was sentenced to death four years after the massacre. During his trial, he admitted carrying out the shooting and linked his actions to his opposition to U.S. military operations in Muslim-majority countries.

The case went through years of appeals and legal challenges. In 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review his appeal, leaving the death sentence in place.

Trump’s authorization removes one of the remaining hurdles before the sentence can be carried out, although the Army must still formally announce the date and location of the execution.
