A Conversation With Claude Leads to a Felony Charge in Florida

A Florida woman is facing a felony charge after a conversation she had with the AI assistant Claude triggered the platform’s safety systems and was ultimately reported to law enforcement.

According to the information available, the woman allegedly wrote on September 26 that she planned to “shoot up” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The message was first flagged by Claude’s automated safety systems. A human reviewer at Anthropic, the company behind Claude, then evaluated the content and reportedly determined that it could represent a credible threat. The company subsequently contacted authorities.

Deputies identified the woman and went to her home, where she was detained without incident.

She has been charged with a second-degree felony for making a written threat of violence under Florida law. She has been charged, not convicted, and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

How Private Are Conversations With AI?

The case also raises an increasingly important question as more people use AI assistants to discuss personal matters, emotions, or even as a form of private diary.

Anthropic says that in limited emergency situations, it may share user information when it believes doing so is necessary to prevent death or serious physical injury.

In this case, the process reportedly was not fully automated. An automated system first flagged the conversation, and a human reviewer assessed it before the company contacted law enforcement.

The incident highlights the growing tension between user privacy and the responsibility of technology companies when their systems detect possible threats of violence.

Should AI companies report threats like this to the police, or should users expect their conversations to remain private?
